The History
"Wawautosa" [waw-wuh-toh-suh]
A Potawatomi First Nation's word for "Firefly". It actually means, "flash flash fire that flies".
Wawautosa Trading Post & Marina (“Wawautosa”) has a deep-rooted history serving the patrons of Six Mile Lake, dating back to the late 1950’s when the facility was built by Bud and Lorna Tolles.
Gas Pump & Work Shop (1960's)
Fast forwarding to late summer of 1973, the property was purchased by Ernie and Antonia Skalitzky. The following April in 1974, Ernie and Toni, along with their sons Steven and Brian, began their first full season of owning and operating the marina.
Brothers Steven and Brian later went on to continue the family legacy as co-owners of the marina, thereby cementing the almost 50-year ownership tenure of the Skalitzky Family, before its sale to Maple Leaf Marinas in January 2022.
